I was out riding, as I usually do in the mornings and I was rocking my tour de cure red rider jersey, at the 25k marker I normally will take a break, thinking to myself just how easier blood sugar support has become. On this particular day I pulled up to my stop and there was this  couple  just enjoying the morning sun and as I sat down and said hi, they kinda wandered over and started talking to me.

One of the first questions the lady asked me was if I had that sugar diabetes and she added that her aunt had the sugar diabetes disease too and she had a tough time managing it because she liked chocolate too much.

Why is it called sugar Diabetes?

I was somewhat perplexed and a little amused because for the love of me, I had never heard it called that before and naturally I asked why she called it that.

She said so innocently” it is called sugar diabetes because it is the sugar disease which is caused by having too much sugar in your blood, that’s why I never eat any sugar she finally added proudly.

The Sugar Diabetes Myth

At this point we had been talking for a few minutes and my break was quickly coming to an end but I couldn’t just leave without imparting some of my expertise on the diabetic life.

  • The sugar she drank in her tea and used to bake cookies with had nothing to do with her contracting diabetes.
  • Diabetes was caused by the pancreas failing to work properly
  • While it was characterized by increased sugar (glucose) in the blood, this sugar was simply a by product of certain foods being  digested foods that produce this sugar are mainly carbohydrates like breads and pasta.
  • Doesn’t matter how much regular sugar she drank, it would not cause diabetes.
  • Her best chance of avoiding diabetes was through a healthy diet and a regular exercise  program.

As I rode off into the sunrise I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself, who says sugar diabetes, I wondered out loud.

It was a moment where I was able to share a little bit of my diabetes management with a stranger and I am sure we both parted ways having known just that more about each other and I felt good for it and hopefully at the very least, she will stop calling it Sugar diabetes.
