High Wire act in Diabetes Management
Last Night I had a chance to watch the documentary “man on a wire”,A film about a young frenchman 24 years at the time named Phillipe Petit who on August 7th 1974, stepped out on a wire illegally rigged between New York’s twin towers, then the worlds tallest buildings.
Eight months of planning and facing numerous extraordinary challenges, he managed to
pull off the act that became known as the artistic crime of the centuary. As he tells it, he lived a lifetime in that hour he was perched 1350 feet high above Newyork streets.
Seeing the shots of the world trade centers and the anniversary having just passed, brought a sense of patriotism to my heart and I have to take a minute to acknowledge all those who perished in a senseless and violent tragedy. May God rest their souls in peace.
While the story is extraordinary, I was amazed at how I could easly relate my diabetes management struggles to it earlier on and even to this day.
The extraordinary challenges we as diabetics face on a daily basis and what Petit had to face is quite comparible.
- The Risk - Balancing on a tight rope wire 1350 feet above the ground possible death with one missed step,as a diabetic one faces the same life or death risks on a daily basis from complications, diabetes coma, hypoglycemia.
- The Challenge – bypassing Security, smuggling in the wire, hooking it between the two buildings all had to be done at night so he could pull off the stunt succesfully my challenges include having to watch my diet, exercise, medications and checking my feet all on a continual and daily basis.
- The co-conspirators – It takes a multitude of people from my medical team, nutritionist, psychologist and lets not forget family, friends and co-workers working hand in hand to make my fight for diabetes management that much easier.
- The Reward – To coin Petit living figuratively and literaly means all the world at my finger tips. I want to live my life to the fullest without someone or something telling me that its impossible.
The man on a wire taught me a great lesson in life and maybe it can do the same for you.
Show the world that Diabetes will not prevent you from living your life to the fullest, take an incredible risk, do the impossible, live your life on the high wire and you will truly be living.
